Dig Down Deeper

In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.
Psalm 86:7

During my sophomore year in Bible College my two friends and I decided to take a trip to the largest shopping mall in Minnesota. While we were shopping, a blizzard was howling outside, and about a foot of snow fell. We were aware of the road conditions, and allowed plenty of time to travel the sixty miles back to college. We were proceeding towards our destination when without warning our car skidded, went out of control, and landed in a ditch in about two feet of snow. We walked to a garage, borrowed some shovels, and began digging out the car. Soon after, a truck came along. The driver stopped and asked, “Do you want any help?”

Do you know what I said? “No thank you. We’ll be all right.” I will never forget the look my two friends gave me. I quickly changed my mind and shouted and waved at the truck. Unfortunately, it was too late, it drove away. So we had to keep on digging ourselves out. How often a similar situation is true in our lives. When help is offered, we would rather do without it, than admit that we need to depend on someone else.

No man, by his own efforts, can bring his whole life into conformity to Jesus Christ. No man through his own self and strength can become a living epistle to proclaim Jesus Christ, and to be read and known of all men. When God offers help in the fulfillment of these requirements, we sometimes look to Him and say, “No thank you, we’ll be all right” just as I did.

The Bible offers us assistance from God in fulfilling His requirements. Romans 10:12 states that “... the same Lord over all is rich unto them that call upon him.” “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” Isaiah 55:6
